What is Universal Foundation?

What is Universal Foundation? Where it is use?

Where am I?

In TheConstructor you can ask and answer questions and share your experience with others!

universal foundation is pile foundation.

it is used at all location, so we call it universal foundation in simple way

basically pile foundation use at

  • where bearing capacity of soil is low
  • where chances of differential settlement of foundation
  • where structural load is very high like bridge or skyskiper building
  • where black cotton soil is present
  • where bearing strata depth is very high
  • where structure need to resist excessive vibration (wind mill)
  • pile foundation we can use every where.

Pile foundation also known as Universal foundation.

In pile foundation, a thin member made of steel concrete is inserted into the poor ground (when soil having low bearing capacity for transmitting the load of a superstructure). The load can be transferred to a strong soil layer by friction or by bearing.

Purpose of Pile foundation

  1. The main purpose of a pile foundation is to transmit the loads into a strong strata.
  2. Normally, pile foundation are used when the bearing capacity of soil is very low & the structural load is heavy.
  3. Comp & water logged soil is ideal for this type of foundation.
  4. Pile are mostly suitable for the foundation of High rise bldg’s, bridges, piers, docks.

Universal Foundation:

It is an offshore foundation & it is nothing but a pile foundation.

Pile foundation is used to transfer the loads from superstructures through weak, compressible strata or water onto stronger, more compact, less compressible, and stiffer soil or rock at depth, increasing the effective size of a foundation and resisting horizontal loads.
