Which are the best steps for checking of reinforcement in RCC structure?

Very important question before providing clearances to pour concrete. I would follow following steps.

  1. Ensure Contractor has bar bending schedule and approved drawing.
  2. Ensure reinforcement used are approved grade and test certificates are in place.
  3. Check  diameter of rebar ( reinforcement)
  4. Check spacing
  5. Check banding radius
  6. Check number of bars
  7. Check laps are of proper length. Some time couplers are used to join the reinforcement. Couplers must be approved.
  8. Check proper cover to rebar is in place.
  9. Covers should be approved
  10. Check the reinforcement installed does not sag  or move. For this ensure you use chairs.
  11. Tie the rebars together using soft annealed lining wire and turn the know inside.
  12. Reinforcement must be clean without any dirt or coating.
  13. Some time special reinforcement steel is provided around openings. Ensure this is in place.
  14. It is normal for QC departments to use check lists for this.

Following steps should be checked:

  1. Check all the certificates of Steel reinforcing bars and ensure that it approved from the respective authority.
  2. Also, check the report of an inspection of RCC bars.
  3. Also, check report of an inspection of welded joint with cast iron.
  4. Ensure that contractor must have a record of acceptance of reinforcement bars and formwork.
  5. Check the record of setting-out floors.
  6. Check the material used in construction must be free from corrosion and its protective cover should not damage.
  7. It must not have any leakage in the bending bar schedule.
  8. The length of the anchorage must meet the design requirements.
  9. Ensure the missing bars in columns and beams.
  10. Ensure the spacings in steel bars of columns and beams.
  11. Ensure that column stirrups meet the design plan.
  12. Check the amount of anti-seismic stirrups provided.
  13. Also, check the stability and strength of formwork.
  14. Check the pre-embedded Steel bars of beams walls and columns are in place.
  15. Compare the structural plan and architectural plan and ensure that all the holes are in the proper place.

Before you release concrete pour you need check installed reinforcement. Steps are:

  • Ensure drawings are approved and you have bar bending schedule. ( BBS)
  • Check all reinforcement you have recieved is as per BBS.
  • Check installed reinforcements for numbers, diameter, bending radius.
  • Check cover
  • Check tieing if rebar is done with soft annealed wire. Knots must be turned inwards
  • Check reinforcement are not sagging or moving during pour.
  • Ensure cleanliness of rebars.
  • Ensure embedded steel or bolts are properly tied to rebar.
  • If Cathodic protection is called for ensure it is in place.
  • Check laps and couplers are proper.
  • Ensure you have test certificate for grade of steel you are using.
  • Following concrete pour perform cover meter checks.

The steps for checking of reinforcement in rcc structure are as follows :-

– The bar should not look rusty.
– Test whether the ends of each bundle of TMT rods is of equal length.
– Ensure each bar on the bundle has the logo of the TMT bar company, without fail.
– If possible check their weight per bundle.
