Nano concrete is concrete along with cement particles in the size range of 0 to 100nm either added later or included in to cent formulation. These small particles tend to fill up all nanopores and increase the quality of concrete drastically even with a small addition of 1% to 2% of cement weight.

A few properties of it are :

  • Increased strength (70 to 100 MPa in 28 days)
  • Increased durability because of lesser pores filled with water.
  • Better workability of the concrete mix.
  • Reduced shrinkage losses and drying shrinkage

Nanotechnology is one of the most active research which has vast app’s in almost all the fields.

As concrete is most usable material in constn industry its been read to improve its quality.

Improving concrete properties by addition of Nano particles have shown remarkable development than regular concrete.

Why nanotechnology for concrete?

  • Improves the material’s bulk properties
  • Ability to ctrl or manipulate materials at the atomic scale.
  • To obtain thinner products & faster setting time.
  • Cost effectiveness
  • Lowered levels of environmental contamination.

Nano concrete

  • A concrete made with portland cement particles that are less than 500mm as a cementing agent.
  • Currently cement particle sizes range from a few Nano-mtrs – about 100μ mtrs.


  • High comp. strengths concrete (15 & 75MPa at 1 day, 40 & 90MPa at 28 days & 48 & 120 MPa at 120 days)
  • High workability with reduced w/c ratio.
  • Use of superplasticizers additives is unnecessary.
  • Fills up all the micropores & micro spaces.
  • Cement saving up to 35-45%.

Nano Concrete :- 

Nano concrete is a form of concrete that contains portland cement particles that are not greater than 100μm and particles of silica not greater than 500μm, which fills voids that would otherwise occur in normal concrete, thereby substantially increasing the materials strength. It is the product of high-energy mixing of sand, water and cement.

Properties :-

  • Gives good and high strength
  • Provides enhanced performance by reducing the void space.
  • Improves durability, shrinkage and bonding to steel reinforcing bars.

I am a researcher in nanotechnology and its uses in construction fields. In simple words,” The technology which works with nanoscale is called nanotechnology”. In Civil engineering, if we can work on nanoscale, i.e. 0 to 10 nanometer, and able to change the molecular properties of cement, then that modified cement concrete is called nano-engineered cement concrete.  Nowadays, it is possible to alter the cement properties according to our use.

  1. i.e. increasing workability without increasing water content.
  2. Increasing setting time without adding any admixtures.
  3. Increasing strength without and additives. etc
