Sorry if this is not the right forum to ask this question, but I am developing a home decor piece for the the structural concrete circular columns that I see in many residential units. I was wondering how often and under what circumstances builders are using these columns in residential high rise buildings, would they always be exposed, a column be found in each unit or are they spaced a certain way that some units may not have one?

Where am I?

Hello Mary,

It is an interesting question.

Theoretically, circular columns are specially adopted for seismic prone areas where high strength and ductility are needed in all directions.

Practically, the circular columns are adopted in commercial/public buildings such as malls, galleries, entrances, and lobbies to enhance the aesthetics. As per my experience and observation, the columns used in these places are either fixed with granite or rendered with a smooth finish.

Coming to your question - Under what circumstances are builders using these columns in residential high-rise buildings?

Circular columns are not preferred inside residential buildings. However, they are used in the entrance lobby of high-rise buildings.
